Why some vaccines cost more than others
Two things drive the total: the price of each dose and how many doses the course needs. Typhoid is a single injection, so the dose price is the whole cost. Rabies is a course of two or three injections, so the course price is what to plan for. Hepatitis A and B combined is three doses on the standard schedule, and the same three doses on the accelerated schedule.
Newer or harder-to-make vaccines such as Japanese encephalitis and rabies cost more per dose than older ones such as typhoid. That is true at every clinic in the country, not just ours.
What a typical trip adds up to
Rather than guess, use our cost planner. Pick your destination and it shows the vaccines usually discussed for that country with the current dose prices, so you can see the range before you book. A short beach holiday in Turkey may need nothing more than a booster, while a month backpacking through South East Asia can involve three or four courses.
Whatever the planner suggests, the final list is decided at your consultation. Many people leave needing fewer vaccines than they expected because their childhood or previous travel jabs still count.
Is the consultation free?
At our clinic, yes. Some clinics charge a consultation or appointment fee on top of the vaccine prices, so check before you compare. We charge only for the doses you have, and if the pharmacist decides you do not need anything, you pay nothing.
Which travel vaccines are free on the NHS?
Hepatitis A, typhoid, cholera and the combined diphtheria, tetanus and polio booster are available free through GP surgeries that offer travel vaccinations. Hepatitis B, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, tick-borne encephalitis and yellow fever are not free on the NHS for travel and are paid for privately wherever you go.

The costs people forget
City-centre clinics often mean parking charges or a Metro fare and time off work for a weekday appointment. We are in Cramlington with free parking at the door and open 7 days a week, including evenings and weekends, so the vaccine price is usually the only cost.
We are also pharmacist-led and registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council, so you get the same regulated service you would expect from a larger chain.
